Are you attending Breaking Boundaries, the AMOSSHE national conference 2016? Is this your first time at an AMOSSHE national conference? If so, what’s it like? What can you expect? And what opportunities are there to make the most of it?
Here are five top tips to help you feel at home once you arrive in Glasgow for Breaking Boundaries!
1. Get wise to Glasgow
We’re delighted to host Breaking Boundaries at the Radisson Blu hotel in the vibrant city of Glasgow, Scotland. The hotel is in the centre of Glasgow, with easy access to transport options. You can find lots of details about travel, accommodation, Glasgow itself, and special offers, on our conference venue page. Offers include discounts for taxis from the airport and for extending your stay in this exciting city.
Find it all here: Breaking Boundaries venue.
2. Pack your bags
What to wear? What to bring? Important questions for every delegate!
You don’t need to dress formally throughout Breaking Boundaries, unless you want to! Most people wear smart-casual attire. If you’re attending our evening event on Wednesday 6 July, this is a casual affair too. However, if you want to show off your new outfit, make the most of our gala dinner on Thursday 7 July – many delegates like to dress up for this occasion. At least make sure to bring your dancing shoes – our gala dinner will feature a traditional Scottish ceilidh (no previous experience needed!) and a DJ for your more freestyle moves afterwards.
Networking at AMOSSHE conferences tends to be informal, so you probably won’t need copies of your résumé or anything like that, but bring your business cards so that you can keep in touch with the people you meet.
If you want to explore Glasgow, we can’t guarantee that the Scottish sun will always shine, so you may want to bring an umbrella!
3. Meet people and network
Most of your fellow delegates at Breaking Boundaries will be Student Services leaders – heads or directors of Student Services overall, heads of specific services, or other managerial roles in higher education. Sounds daunting? Don’t worry! AMOSSHE conferences are always very friendly, and a great opportunity to meet new people and share ideas. Everyone is a professional, but the tone is relaxed and inclusive – so don’t feel shy about introducing yourself and joining in the conversations.
You’ll also have the opportunity to meet our conference supporters, who offer products and services to help support your work in Student Services and develop new approaches. You can find out more about our supporters here: Breaking Boundaries supporters.
There are lots of breaks throughout the event, and many of the workshops involve practical group work, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to engage with people.
You can also take part in our informal networking sessions, which take place on Thursday 7 July at 16:45 and Friday 8 July at 09:30 and 11:00. These sessions are led by AMOSSHE members to meet people and discuss ideas. You can find details of the session topics in the conference brochure, which you’ll receive when you arrive at Breaking Boundaries – just choose the networking sessions you want to attend, and drop in!
4. Find out about AMOSSHE
If you’re not a member of AMOSSHE, The Student Services Organisation, you won’t be alone – lots of other delegates are non-members too. You’ll be able to take part in everything that Breaking Boundaries has to offer.
The first session in the conference programme is a chance to find out about the progress and work of AMOSSHE in higher education this year, with an overview of the organisation in general, which we’re combining with our annual general meeting for the first time. This session gives everyone an opportunity to see the progress AMOSSHE has been making. As part of the annual general meeting, lead AMOSSHE members will be asked to vote on motions, and you’ll learn who will lead AMOSSHE as Chair and Executive Members for the next two years.
If you’re interested in finding out more about AMOSSHE, our work, opportunities and resources, we’re hosting a networking session on Thursday 7 July at 16:45 to tell you all about it. Drop in to find out more, and meet other people who are new to AMOSSHE (details in the conference brochure).
5. Take part and win!
During the course of Breaking Boundaries you can take part in our conference competitions, which include best picture and best tweet. Great prizes are available for the winners, which we’ll give out at the gala dinner on Thursday 7 July. You can find details of the competitions in your conference brochure, which you’ll receive when you arrive at Breaking Boundaries.
In addition, many of our conference supporters offer prize draws, so make sure you visit the exhibition area to find out how to win!
